Choosing & using a microscope
Which microscope is right for me?
The Student Microscope is a starting point for learning with prepared slides. Biological compound models suit more detailed slide observation; stereo models suit solid objects and electronics inspection. Compare the options in our Buying Guide, or ask us for help choosing.
What is the difference between the PL200 and PW80 binocular microscopes?
Objectives: The PL200 binocular has four 195EP plan achromatic objectives: 4×, 10×, 40× (spring-loaded), and 100× (spring-loaded, oil immersion). The PW80 binocular has four 185 achromatic objectives at the same magnifications. The PL200's plan design helps keep the image field flatter toward the edges. The numbers 195 and 185 are objective specifications, not 195× or 185× magnification.
Light and controls: The PL200 has a rechargeable 3W LED with adjustable brightness and 3000–6500 K color temperature, a specified 0.002 mm fine-focus adjustment, and a 30° binocular head that rotates 360°. The PW80 has a rechargeable 1W LED with adjustable brightness and a 30° binocular head with diopter and 48–76 mm interpupillary adjustment. Both have coarse and fine focus, an X-Y mechanical stage, and an Abbe condenser (NA 1.25). The published PW80 specification gives fine-focus travel, not a fine-adjustment step, so those numbers should not be compared as the same measurement.
Which should I choose? Choose PL200 if a flatter image field, adjustable light color, and its specified fine adjustment matter to you. Choose PW80 for capable routine observation of prepared slides at a lower price. Both include WF10× and WF16× eyepieces for 40×–1600× total magnification; 100× observation requires immersion oil. Neither binocular model lists a dedicated camera port; see the trinocular versions if you need one. Check the linked product pages for current prices.
Are batteries and prepared slides included with the Student Microscope?
Its LED light uses AAA batteries, which are not included. The 100 Prepared Slides Set is sold separately. Check the product page for the full list of included items.
Can I observe through the eyepieces of the PW80 or PL200 Trinocular while the camera is capturing images?
Yes. Both the PW80 Trinocular and PL200 Trinocular allow simultaneous eyepiece observation and camera imaging. Their trinocular optical systems use a 1:1 (50:50) beam split, distributing light equally between the eyepieces and the camera port. This means you can continue observing through the eyepieces while the camera is capturing or displaying an image.
Where can I learn how to use the microscope?
Start with our How to Use a Compound Microscope guide. The Microscope Parts and Functions page explains the labeled components. Follow the manual supplied with your specific model for its controls and power requirements.
How should I care for the lenses?
Remove loose dust with a soft air blower. For marks, use lens paper and a cleaner intended for microscope optics, following your model’s instructions. Avoid rough cloths and household cleaners. Cover the microscope when it is not in use.
